2 gen 2020 · Born at Pau, France on January 26, 1763, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was the son of Jean Henri and Jeanne Bernadotte. Raised locally, Bernadotte elected to pursue a military career rather than become a tailor like his father. Enlisting in the Régiment de Royal-Marine on September 3, 1780, he initially saw service in Corsica and Collioure.

When Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte was born on 26 January 1763, in Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Aquitaine, France, his father, Jean Henri Bernadotte, was 51 and his mother, Jeanne De Saint-Jean, was 34. He married Bernadine Eugénie Désirée Clary on 17 August 1798, in Sceaux, Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France.

11 feb 2024 · This was apparently not uncommon in Navarre at the time. He always signed "J. Bernadotte". But as a revolutionary general he added a Roman name ("Jules"), which was again not uncommon at the time. "In the Act of Succession of 1810 he is called "Johan Baptist Julius", which is the Swedish version of Jean Baptiste Jules.
