Raised locally, Bernadotte elected to pursue a military career rather than become a tailor like his father. But as a revolutionary general he added a Roman name ("Jules"), which was again not uncommon at the time. "In the Act of Succession of 1810 he is called "Johan Baptist Julius", which is the Swedish version of Jean Baptiste Jules.
