In February 1815, the Kentucky General Assembly incorporated the land as the town of Covington. [1] At the time of its incorporation, Covington and all of today's Kenton County was a part of Campbell County. The election results were heavily disputed, and Goebel was assassinated after just four days, and he remains the only state governor to be assassinated while in office.
