James Alexander Thomson est un biologiste américain né en 1958. C'est lui qui isole pour la première fois, en 1998, des cellules souches embryonnaires chez l'humain. Après la découverte en 1981 des cellules souches chez les souris, Thomson et son équipe parviennent à isoler des cellules souches embryonnaires chez des primates non-humains en 1995.
Thomson was introduced to John Dyer, Aaron Hill, Alexander Pope, and Richard Savage among others. His first major publication was Winter (1726), and inspired by its success, Thomson added Summer (1727), Spring (1728) and finally Autumn (1730), which first appeared in the four-poem sequence, published in quarto by subscription.
