On September 25, 1857, Oscar’s eldest son Carl was declared Regent. After being bedridden for a long period, King Oscar I died at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on July 8, 1859, at the age of 60. An autopsy confirmed that he had a brain tumor. King Oscar I was buried in the Bernadotte Chapel at Riddarholmen Church in Stockholm.
Prince Bernadotte, 1892–present. Oscar Bernadotte renounced his titles as Prince of Sweden and Duke of Gotland when he married below his station in 1888. However, he was allowed by his father, King Oscar II, to keep the courtesy title of Prince and then be styled as Prince Bernadotte.
