Using the newly coined phrase kinship coterie to describe the group of kinswomen whose coterie becomes a forum for sharing ideas and for writing texts, this book considers how half-sisters Mary Shelley and Fanny Imlay, and their step-sister, Claire Clairmont, respond in dialogic fashion to themes originally raised by the mother figure, Mary Wollstonecraft.

Fanny Imlay, también conocida como Fanny Godwin, nació el 14 de mayo de 1794 en Le Havre, Francia. Era la hija ilegítima de la destacada feminista británica Mary Wollstonecraft y el aventurero y comerciante estadounidense Gilbert Imlay. La relación entre Mary Wollstonecraft y Gilbert Imlay fue apasionada pero tumultuosa.
After her mother's death, Shelley lived with her older half-sister Fanny Imlay and their father. Fanny Imlay was Wollstonecraft's daughter from an affair she had with a soldier. Shelley's father married Mary Jane Clairmont in 1801. Clairmont already had two children and later had a son with Shelley's father.
