On 17 November 1919, a besotted King Alexander I secretly married Aspasia Manos, the daughter of Constantine I's aide-de-camp Colonel Petros Manos and his first wife, Maria. The royal family and the government disapproved of this unequal-status marriage; she was a mere commoner. The public were unenthusiastic.

Princess Aspasia Manos (4 September 1896-7 August 1972) was the wife of Alexander I, King of the Hellenes. She was born in Athens, the daughter of Colonel Petros Manos and his wife, Maria Argyropoulos. Her family descended, in part, from Phanariote Greeks living in Constantinople (now Istanbul).
