Life. Barnim was the sixth child of Duke Philip I of Pomerania-Wolgast and his wife Maria of Saxony, Duchess of Pomerania.Philip died in 1560 and was survived by five of his sons; in addition to Barnim, they were his older brothers John Frederick (1542–1600), Bogislaw XIII (1544–1606) and Ernest Louis (1545–1592) and Barnim's younger brother Casimir VI (1557–1605).
When Duke Wartislaw III died in 1264, Barnim I was able to unite the whole Duchy of Pomerania under his rule. He promoted the Ostsiedlung by introducing German settlers and customs into the duchy, established many towns, among them Prenzlau, Szczecin, Gartz, Anklam, Stargard, Gryfino, Police, Pyrzyce, Ueckermünde and Goleniów.
After the death of son Wartislaw IV's son Barnim IV, Duke of Pomerania in 1365, Pomerania-Barth was divided in 1372 under the Treaty of Anklam. The Eastern part, between the rivers Swine and Łeba , was called Pomerania-Stolp and was initially ruled by Duke Bogislaw V and the Western duchies of Pomerania-Barth, initially ruled by Duke Wartislaw VI and Pomerania-Wolgast, ruled by Duke Bogislaw VI .
Barnim XI (1501–1573; by some accounts Barnim IX), son of Bogislaw X, Duke of Pomerania, became duke on his father's death in 1523. Barnim V (1369–1402/1403) was one of the Dukes of Pomerania. He was the son of Bogislaw V. He ruled over parts of Pomerania-Stolp; first the territories near Stargard Szczeciński, and in his last years, 1402–1403, he co-ruled Pomerania-Stolp with his brother, Bogislaw VIII .
