30 ott 2023 · Longtime bookseller Henry Berliner died last Wednesday at age 73. Berliner was the owner for many years of the Foundry Bookstore, New Haven, Conn., which opened in 1974 and closed in 2003.
The father-and-son team of Emile and Henry Berliner became the first Americans to make any significant progress towards the. creation of a practical helicopter. Before 1926, they pioneered a number of experimental helicopters with only moderate success.
Berliner later spun off the Gyro Motor Company from this work. A test rig was flown in 1908, followed by two other upgrades before Berliner focused on his other businesses. In 1919, Emile Berliner's son, Henry Berliner, left the Army Air Service as an aerial photographer to work with his father on helicopter designs.
Berliner was a native of Washington D.C. Emile Berliner, his father, was an inventor whose best-known invention was what is now known as a phonograph record. Henry Berliner was a technical genius in his own right and studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University for two years before transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Emile's son Henry Adler Berliner (1895--1970), was also an engineer who began to work with his father in helicopter experimentation in 1919, after serving in the US Army Air Service as an aerial photographer. Henry's first effort was a coaxial design mounted on a two-wheeled test stand that was soon transformed into a crewed version.
