The Curtis Institute is America's most selective higher learning institution (3.2% admissions rate) and trains students in music and/or opera who are musically gifted. All students attend on full scholarships. One can buy tickets to one of the institute's more formal events or attend any Student Recital Series for free.
The Curtis Institute of Music opened on October 13, 1924. It fulfilled the fondest dream of Mary Louise Curtis Bok, the only child of Philadelphia-based Louisa Knapp and Cyrus H. K. Curtis, whose Curtis Publishing Company produced two of the most popular magazines in America: the Saturday Evening Post and the Ladies’ Home Journal.
Curriculum. The Curtis curriculum is designed to meet students where they are in their musical journeys and to offer instruction, guidance, and inspiration as they pursue their goals. Students are given the opportunity to study technique and artistic expression in order to deepen their musicality and nurture their unique voices.
