  1. Ezra Stiles was born in 1727 in North Haven, Connecticut, the son of the Rev. Isaac Stiles. He graduated from Yale College in 1746. He studied theology and was ordained in 1749. He tutored at Yale from that year until 1755. He resigned from the ministry in 1753 to study law and practiced in New Haven, but returned to the cloth two years later.

  3. Ezra Stiles College. In the year 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, and Samuel Hopkins, Stiles' colleague in Newport, Rhode Island, published his anti-slavery pamphlet, A Dialogue Concerning the Slavery of the Africans. In that same year, 1776, Ezra Stiles still owned the slave that he had obtained directly through slave trading.

  4. Ezra Stiles bequeathed a “cabinet of manuscripts containing 30 or 40 volumes” to his son-in-law, Abiel Holmes (1763-1837) (Yale 1783), with a requirement that they be deposited in Yale College ten years after Stiles’s death.

  5. Stiles Music Box Series. A new Stiles music series started in 2022 inspired by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Groups of students perform ‘pop-up’ sets in different parts of the college. The program was started by Jefferey Steele ES ‘24 and the Head of College Office. A call for interested artists goes out at the beginning of each term.
