24 lug 2014 · Jonathan R0senbaum described The Argyle Secrets to me as a minor masterpiece, and though I might not wholly agree after viewing a rather ratty copy, I certainly found it interesting. Endfield, who also scripted, adapting his own radio play, has a neat MacGuffin: an album of information incriminating several prominent Americans of making treasonous deals with the Nazis in case the Allies lost WWII.
What a nutty noir. They don't even give anyone watching time to settle in as to wtf is going on. A reporter visiting his newspaper buddy in the hospital is immediately involved in some convoluted conspiracy involving a MacGuffin paper trail, the "Argyle Secrets," that could incriminate Nazi supporting Americans.
The supporting cast of this Film Classics programmer includes future Danny Thomas Show co-star Marjorie Lord and former "Dick Tracy" portrayer Ralph Byrd. The Argyle Secrets was written and directed by one-time MGM film editor Cyril Endfield, later the man behind the megaphone on Zulu (1964).
