Popular at the time, the Romantic approach to portraiture was concerned with expressing emotional and psychological states of the individual.

20 nov 2018 · Courbet’s characterization of himself as the “proudest and most arrogant man in France” seems distant from the horrified figure in The Desperate Man.A little-known self-portrait completed around the same time, entitled Man Mad with Fear (ca. 1843), shows the artist with an almost identically wretched expression, but in this scene, he crouches down at the edge of an abyss.
14 ott 2023 · Naturally,The Desperate Man (Le Désespéré) was completed using oil on cavas, which was the standard manner used right across his career and entirely typical of 19th century French art. Courbet was also a highly skilled draughtsman and would likely have completed several sketches of himself prior to commencing this more complex piece in oils.

The Desperate Man is a 1959 British B movie crime film directed by Peter Maxwell and starring Conrad Phillips, Jill Ireland, William Hartnell, Charles Gray and Peter Swanwick. The plot involves a writer who investigates a murder in the tower of a castle. It is adapted from the 1958 novel Beginner's Luck by Paul Somers, the writer better known as Andrew Garve.
