27 set 2011 · Shit Year is a thematic twin to Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, both heightened fables about the slow disintegration of a retired actress mourning her now-dead career by retreating inward. But Archer’s black-and-white nightmare uses experimental-film techniques (an overlapping sound design and non-linear narrative jumps) to update a very classic form of melodramatic suffering.
Bizarrely impenetrable, indulgent, yet interesting film that ends up feeling like Persona made by a third year film student. No denying the technical craft here - anything that utilizes black and white photography and soundscapes like this will always get my attention, but so much of the “character” aspect of this psychological character study feels pretty underdeveloped.

Wie schon in seinem Debüt, dem schwebenden Coming-of-Age-Film „Wild Tigers I Have Known“ , löst sich Cam Archer nicht nur von den Regeln einer klassischen Erzählung, sondern auch von den Konventionen des Genres. So ist „Shit Year“ weder eine typische Midlife-Crisis-Geschichte, noch ein Hollywood-Porträt im eigentlichen Sinn.
Fest steht, dieser Film ist vor allem Eines: Ellen Barkin. Sie spielt eine in die Tage gekommene, amerikanische Schauspielerin namens Colleen West. Das tut sie grandios und mit einem unendlichen Facettenreichtum, weshalb Shit Year an Sunset Boulevard und Endstation Sehnsucht erinnert.
