On 16 July 2001, Jacques Rogge was elected to succeed Juan Antonio Samaranch and become the 8th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Rogge was an accomplished sailor, competing in three Olympic Games (1968, 1972, 1976) with his best finish in that sport being 14th in the Finn Monotype Class in 1972 at Munich.
Jacques Rogge was the orthopaedic surgeon and former Olympic sailor for Belgium, who took the helm of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as its president, from 2001 to 2013.

29 ago 2021 · LONDON (AP) — Jacques Rogge approached the job of running the Olympics the same way he approached his work as a physician: Listen, analyze and consult. Before taking over as president of the International Olympic Committee, Rogge, whose death was announced Sunday, was an orthopedic surgeon who saw 5,000 patients and performed 800 operations a year at his medical practice in Ghent, Belgium.
