He was discharged the same year though and became a spy for Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon. After meeting General James Longstreet in April 1863, he then became a spy for him.

On June 28, 1863 Harrison informed Longstreet and Lee about the advancement of Union positions from Frederick, Maryland, who were in pursuit of the Confederate forces. As a result of his information, Lee concentrated his forces near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and engaged the Union Army beginning on July 1, 1863 and ending on July 3, which resulted in a major victory for the North.
