Elizabeth, Countess of Longford, was a British historian. She was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was on the board of trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in London. Her biographies include those of 19th century luminaries such as Queen Victoria (1964), Lord Byron (1976) and the Duke of Wellington (2 volumes 1969).

When the historical biographer, Elizabeth Longford died, aged 96, in October 2003, her granddaughter Flora Fraser and Peter Soros, Flora’s American husband, had the idea of founding a prize. Commemorating Elizabeth Longford’s name, it should celebrate annually a historical biography which, like hers, combined scholarship and narrative drive.
Elizabeth (Harman) Pakenham, Countess of Longford, CBE was born on 30 August 1906. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Bishop Harman. She married Sir Francis Aungier Pakenham, 7th Earl of Longford, KG, PC, son of Thomas Pakenham, 5th Earl of Longford and Lady Mary Julia Child-Villiers, on 3 November 1931. She died on 23 October 2002.
