Rimasto nell'immaginario per l'atroce parto della Eggar, il film di Cronenberg è un mainstream deviato; possiede la struttura e la messinscena di un film di tensione secondo i dettami hitchcockiani (e Brood ha diversi richiami ad Hitchcock) con derive personalissime, ovviamente nella messinscena del corpo che muta.
This movie is absolutely, positively off the wall. I feel like with The Brood, the Cronenberg that we all know and love came into being. Not that there was anything wrong with his previous seventies work, but in my eyes, this was the film that paved the way for the director's subsequent masterpieces: Videodrome, The Fly, etc.
It's never really a mystery thriller, because we guess what's going to happen before the characters do. It has enough dialog to sound as if it takes itself seriously - but listen to the dialog, and it's nonsense. The pacing is so uncertain that we don't always know how we're supposed to feel. And the last gruesome moments seem more like a geek ...
