David Jonathan Gross (/ ɡ r oʊ s /; born February 19, 1941) is an American theoretical physicist and string theorist. Along with Frank Wilczek and David Politzer, he was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of asymptotic freedom.

Gross was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics for 2004 together with David Politzer and Frank Wilczek for their discovery concerning this strong force, and in his drawing Gross depicts both their discovery and the theory that was quickly developed to explain it.
