Soon after the accession of King George VI in 1936, Queen Elizabeth began to form a small but well-chosen collection of eighteenth and early nineteenth-century British watercolours and drawings. A number of works, such as those by Thomas Gainsborough and John Varley, reflect her wider interest in the landscape tradition.
Thirty-three years after Mabel Hankey first painted a portrait of her as a child, Queen Elizabeth commissioned the elderly artist to make a watercolour copy of a favourite portrait photograph. This had been taken by the fashionable photographer Cecil Beaton in the summer of 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
