La Calabria ha un territorio di montagna che si estende per il 41,8%. Presenta ampie zone di montagna, a nord il versante meridionale del Massiccio del Pollino al confine con la Basilicata.
La Calabria fu direttamente coinvolta nelle vicende belliche del conflitto dal 1943, quando l'esercito alleato decise di gettare una testa di ponte nella regione per cercare di tagliare la ritirata alle forze italo-tedesche dalla Sicilia.
