The Treaty of Lisbon (initially known as the Reform Treaty) is an international agreement that amends the two treaties which form the constitutional basis of the European Union (EU). The Treaty of Lisbon, which was signed by all EU member states on 13 December 2007, entered into force on 1 December 2009. [2]

The Lisbon Treaty is largely inspired by the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. The constitution had been intended to replace the EU’s founding treaties with a single text. It was signed in Rome on 29 October 2004.

The IGC responsible for drawing up a European Reform Treaty opened in Lisbon on 23 July 2007 (European Parliament representatives: Elmar Brok, Enrique Barón Crespoand Andrew Duff).
