place in English literature. In English literature: Anglo-American Modernism: Pound, Lewis, Lawrence, and Eliot. His experimental play Enemy of the Stars, published in Blast in 1914, and his experimental novel Tarr (1918) can still surprise with their violent exuberance.
The Enemy of the Stars was an attempt by Lewis to present an uncompromising alternative vision, in yet another medium, the medium of the theatre. The play was written as an example of what could be achieved using the Vorticist toolkit.
He also wrote and published a play, Enemy of the Stars. It is a proto-absurdist, Expressionist drama. Lewis scholar Melania Terrazas identifies it as a precursor to the plays of Samuel Beckett .
Abstract. What follows, by way of a preface to a series of readings primarily of Lewis’ interwar work, is a reading of the experimental Vorticist play, Enemy of the Stars (1914), followed by a brief résumé of Lewis’ main work of political analysis, The Art of Being Ruled (1926).
