Sokolov's touch in the central movement of the G-Major is infinitely varied, his depth of sound entirely in keeping with his conception and used to contrast with the most fantastical staccatos. Sokolov now takes my first recommendation in these pieces - previously reserved for Backhaus.
Here is a wonderful matching of musical individuality and perception – the whole of a live recital with Grigory Sokolov in commanding form. The pictures are secondary, save for adding value when it comes to registering the pianist’s reactions.
