Beginning in class 5 parents can choose for their children between the Förderstufe or the G5 - Gymnasium (grammar school level).
Gustav-Heinemann-Comprehensive School was founded in 1981 in Essen, once a mining town, now a service industry center in Germany's multicultural Ruhr region, which featured as European Capital of Culture for the year 2010. About 1300 pupils aged 10 to 18 attend years 5 to 13 (secondary levels I and II).
