Biography. Born Penelope Loader Maffey, she was the daughter of Sir John Maffey, later 1st Baron Rugby, who was to become Governor-General of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies and wartime United Kingdom Representative to Dublin.

16 mag 2021 · Considering state change and metamorphosis, the works in this exhibition embody chaos and compost through painting, video, poetry and sound. In dark reflexive paintings, Penelope Aitken uses ink brewed from plants to reflect on the nature of nature.
Penelope Aitken makes paintings and installations about relationships: between people, between things and especially between culture and nature. Her current work considers the naming of plants during the Enlightenment and where that cultural moment continues to meet Indigenous knowledge.
