Claudia of Chalon-Orange (1498 – May 31, 1521) was Princess of Orange. In 1515, she married Henry III of Nassau-Breda, thus uniting the houses of Orange and Nassau. [1] . Their son, René of Chalon, [1] was the first Nassau to be Prince of Orange .

Claudia of Châlon was the daughter of John of Chalon, lord of Arlay and Philiberte of Luxemburg Ligny. She was raised mainly at the French court. She was buried in the Grote kerk ("big church") in Breda. View map. Claudia of Châlon-Orange was the second wife of Henry III of Nassau-Breda, whom she had married in 1515.
René de Chalon, the son of Hendrik III and Claudia de Chalon, inherited the sovereign principality of Orange from his uncle Philibert de Chalon. When René died childless in 1544, he left his estates to his German cousin William of Nassau (1533-1584), who, as Prince William I, founded the House of Orange-Nassau.
With his second wife Claudia of Chalon, Hendrik III had a son: named René of Chalon. The latter in 1530 inherited the principality of Orange in France from his unmarried uncle Philibert of Chalon. René was a.o. Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelre and Zutphen.
