The band was formed as Still Life in 1981 in Jamestown, New York, [2] by Dennis Drew (keyboards), Steven Gustafson (bass), Chet Cardinale (drums), Robert Buck (guitar) and Buck's ex-wife [3] Terri Newhouse (vocals). Gustafson invited Natalie Merchant, who was 17 at the time, to do some vocals.

Shortly after the band’s 1992 release album, Time in Eden, Merchant parted ways with the band to pursue a solo career and released her debut, Tigerlily, in 1995. Before leaving 10,000 Maniacs in 1993, Merchant gave an iconic performance on MTV Unplugged with the band, which included an epic cover of Patti Smith‘s 1978 classic “Because the Night.”
The band released seven albums through the 1999 release The Earth Pressed Flatwith singer Mary Ramsey before taking a nearly 15-year hiatus. 10,000 Maniacs released their eighth album, Music From the Motion Picture, in 2013 with the follow-up Twice Told Tales in 2015 and the 2016 EP For Crying Out Loud. Buck was married to Terri Newhouse from 1979 to 1981. [1] Death. On November 30, 2000, Buck was airlifted from WCA Hospital in Jamestown, New York, to the UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. [7] . Guitarist Robert Buck, keyboardist Dennis Drew, bassist Steven Gustafson, drummer Chet Cardinale, and vocalist Terri Newhouse formed Still Life in early 1981. Not long after their inception, vocalist Natalie Merchant started to sit in with the band, as did guitarist John Lombardo.
