In 1997 he wrote and directed the TV film Chistilishche ("Purgatory") about the Chechen war, co-produced with Boris Berezovsky and released in March 1998. As the Chechen War dragged on, his views changed and he became skeptical of Russian imperialism.

A wounded colonel, who has lost his eye, leads platoon in fighting for a hospital complex in Grozny, which is occupied by Russian soldiers.
Chistilishche is a weird movie. It's full of strange, pointless gore (like the Russian tank - there is only one such working in the movie - driving back and forth on a Russian bodies in a long close-up scene), but it's not an anti-war film.
1 feb 2014 · It takes place during the battle for Grozny, the capital city of the Chechen Republic, and depicts the struggle for control of a hospital, between the Russian platoon currently in occupation, and a multi-national force of rebels, attempting to take the building.
