In May 1998, after limited commercial success with Book of Shadows, Wylde and drummer Phil Ondich recorded what became Black Label Society's debut album Sonic Brew. It was decided, rather than the album being another solo album for Wylde, that they would form a long term band.

Phil "Philth" Ondich is an American drummer from near Mansfield, Ohio. In 1997, Ondich was playing in hard rock band Raging Slab. Having met Zakk Wylde several times while he was touring for his 1996 solo record Book of Shadows, the two agreed to work together on a project Wylde had been planning.
Zakk and co (in this case, drummer Phil Ondich) returned to the studio a year after their debut album to record 2000's Stronger Than Death. This also marks the second and final appearance of Phil Ondich, who was sacked before the recording of their next album 1919 Eternal.
Due to the delay, Wylde and drummer Phil Ondich recorded "Lost My Better Half" as a bonus track for the U.S. edition. (The recording of the more aggressive track reportedly prompted Wylde to pursue a heavier direction for the band's music thereafter.)
