La x corrisponde come forma alla lettera greca X (chi), che rappresentava nella pronuncia antica il suono kh. Negli alfabeti della Magna Grecia X era usata con il valore proprio della lettera Ξ (csi), indicando la sequenza di suoni ks, e con questo valore l’accolsero nel loro alfabeto i Romani.
