John Stewart, Commendator of Coldingham. Arms of John Stewart, Prior of Coldingham. John Stewart, Commendator of Coldingham (1531–1563) was a Scottish landowner. He was a son of Elizabeth Carmichael (1514–1550) and James V of Scotland. [1] His mother later married John Somerville of Cambusnethan. [2]
24 ago 2022 · John Stewart was born around 1594. John was the second son of Francis Stewart and Margaret Douglas. He was the last Commendator of Coldingham Priory and 1st secular feudal Baron of Coldingham. On 16 June 1622 he transferred the barony to his elder brother, Francis.

The barony of Coldingham, previously the possession of the Priory, was erected as a temporal lordship, under the Great Seal, dated 16 October 1621, upon John Stewart, second son of Francis Stewart, 1st Earl of Bothwell, who was the last Commendator of Coldingham Priory.
He was, before 1568, Commendator of Kelso Abbey in Roxburghshire, which position he had exchanged with John Maitland, in place of the offer of Coldingham Priory which Maitland then held until his forfeiture in 1570.
