The Superstars was a televised sporting event featuring ten top athletes from ten different sports competing in events that were not their own. The idea was developed by Dick Button who shopped the idea to all three U.S. television networks.

The superstars. The exhibition you are going to visit occupies the eastern sector of the underground level, the true backstage of the spectacles that took place on the arena floor. This area was, in ancient times, directly connected by a cryptoporticus (covered gallery) to the barracks for gladiators, the Ludus Magnus (‘large barrack’).

The Superstars was first broadcast by ABC Sports as a two-hour special in 1973. Bob Seagren, an Olympic pole vault gold medalist, was the first winner. However, it was heavyweight champion boxer Joe Frazier who nearly stole the show, almost at the cost of life and limb.
