Il nome Planxty in gaelico irlandese è una composizione musicale in omaggio ad un ospite, un mecenate, un benefattore ed è usata da Turlough O'Carolan in numerose composizioni. Planxty potrebbe derivare da una corruzione del termine augurale gaelico sláinte, oppure dal latino plangere che vuol dire supplicare.
Planxty were an Irish folk music band formed in January 1972,: 99–100 consisting initially of Christy Moore (vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhrán), Andy Irvine (vocals, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, harmonica), Dónal Lunny (bouzouki, guitars, bodhrán, keyboards), and Liam O'Flynn (uilleann pipes, tin whistle).
Irish folk band active 1972 - 1975, 1979 - 1983, and 2003 - 2005. The original lineup of Christy Moore, Liam O'Flynn, Andy Irvine, and Donal Lunny came together in 1972 after working together on Moore's album Prosperous.
