Down by the Old Mainstream is the debut album by American alternative country band Golden Smog, released in 1995. Its title is from a line in both the Wilco song "Someday Soon" from the album, Being There, and from "Radio King", the last track on this album.
Special release of Golden Smog - Weird Tales in an o'card, bundled with (Also Contains) Golden Smog - Down By The Old Mainstream. Both albums are the original CDs in green-tinted jewel cases. Credits are CD1 (main CD of this release), for credits CD2 see Down By The Old Mainstream .

The first full-length Golden Smog album, Down By The Old Mainstream, released in early 1996, had 12 originals and 2 covers, and included Scot Summit (Tweedy) and drummer Leonardson Saratoga (Noah Levy of the Honeydogs), but not Pirner.

1 nov 1998 · The set opens with a cover of Rosanne Cash’s “Seven Year Ache” and includes a few songs destined for Down By The Old Mainstream, including “Ill Fated”, “Glad & Sorry” and “Yesterday Cried”.
In 1995, the group released its full-length debut, Down by the Old Mainstream (recorded at Pachyderm Recording Studio), consisting of mostly original songs, with a handful of covers.
