Il termine Nouvelle vague ("nuova onda") apparve per la prima volta sul settimanale francese L'Express il 3 ottobre 1957, in un'inchiesta sui giovani francesi a firma di Françoise Giroud, e venne ripreso da Pierre Billard nel febbraio 1958 sulla rivista Cinéma 58.

Nouvelle Vague est un groupe français, originaire de Paris, composé de Marc Collin et Olivier Libaux se proposant de reprendre des titres classiques de la new wave (essentiellement des mouvances synthpop, cold wave, goth rock et post-punk).
La Nouvelle Vague 1, 2, 3, 4 est un mouvement du cinéma français né à la fin des années 1950 et qui a duré une dizaine d'années jusqu'à la fin des années 1960. Il rassemble des réalisateurs et réalisatrices qui ont tourné leurs premiers longs métrages à cette période.
