Hans Albrecht was the eldest son of Wilhelm Friedrich, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein and his wife Princess Marie Melita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. The Hereditary Prince fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1944 when he died from wounds received in action near Jedlińsk, Poland.

When the Head of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg, Albert, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein, died on 27 April 1931, Friedrich's father Friedrich Ferdinand became the Head of the House of Oldenburg and inherited the title of Duke of Schleswig-Holstein.

Prince Hans Albrecht's grandfather, Duke Friederich Ferdinand died on 21 January 1934, after which his father became head of the family, while Peter's older brother Hans Albrecht became hereditary prince. Hereditary Prince Hans Albrecht fell during World War II on 10 August 1944.
