Biography. Egan and Rafferty met as teenagers in Paisley, and became the core of Stealers Wheel. They were initially joined by Roger Brown, Rab Noakes and Iain Campbell in 1972. By the time the band was signed to A&M Records later that year, Brown, Noakes and Campbell had been replaced by Paul Pilnick, Tony Williams and Rod Coombes. [2]
The many philosophical and existential themes explored in Egan and Rafferty’s songwriting remain relevant to this day. Rod Coombes, Paul Pilnick, and Tony Williams reunited to revive Stealers Wheel in the early 2000s and are still making music as Stealers Wheel as of 2021.
They elected former Apple Studios employee Paul Pilnick as lead guitarist, and the group remained a trio for the next year before enlisting drummer Rod Coombes and bassist Tony Williams. Stealers Wheel released their first album, the eponymous Stealers Wheel, in 1972.
2 ott 2021 · Tributes have poured in for Liverpool musician Paul Pilnick who enjoyed success with famous band Stealers Wheel. Paul, who grew up in Granby, died on September 17 aged 80 after a short illness.
Rafferty and Egan recruited Paul Pilnick (an original member of the semi-legendary Liverpool group, The Big Three) on guitar, Rod Coombes on drums and Tony Williams on bass; A&M meanwhile paid Transatlantic for Rafferty's contract, so the band started recording in December 1972, and released Stealers Wheel the following year.
Chambers left in March 1964 and was replaced by Paul Pilnick from Lee Curtis' Allstars. Pilnick only stayed a short time before moving on to Tony Jackson & The Vibrations in October 1964, with Ruffley leaving around the same time.
