The 1992 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XVI Olympic Winter Games (French: XVI es Jeux Olympiques d'hiver) and commonly known as Albertville '92 (Arpitan: Arbèrtvile '92), was a winter multi-sport event held from 8 to 23 February 1992 in and around Albertville, France.
American speed skater Bonnie Blair won the 500m and 1000m events, while Gunda Niemann of Germany took both of the longest races. Alpine skier Petra Kronberger of Austria won both the combined event and the slalom. Ki-hoon Kim of South Korea earned gold medals in both short track events.

Something else that was new to the Winter Olympics in Albertville was the introduction of a number of new Olympic sports and events to the winter Games. Women competed in biathlon for the first time. Men and women competed in short-track speedskating, skated pack-style indoors.

Albertville was chosen to host the 1992 Olympic Winter Games on 17 October 1986 during the 91st IOC Session in Lausanne. It was selected over candidate cities Anchorage (USA), Berchtesgaden (Germany), Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy), Falun (Sweden), Lillehammer (Norway) and Sofia (Bulgaria).
