The Philipps University of Marburg ( German: Philipps-Universität Marburg) is a public research university located in Marburg, Germany. It was founded in 1527 by Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse, which makes it one of Germany's oldest universities and the oldest still operating Protestant university in the world.
The University of Marburg is the oldest higher education institution in the world to be founded as a Protestant University, although the university no longer has a religious affiliation. The university is known for its excellent life sciences teaching, and has one of Germany’s most well-established medical faculties.
