The Life and Death of King Richard the Second, commonly called Richard II, is a history play by William Shakespeare believed to have been written around 1595. Based on the life of King Richard II of England (ruled 1377–1399), it chronicles his downfall and the machinations of his nobles.
Richard II is charismatic, eloquent and loved by his friends. And a disastrous King – dishonest, capricious and politically incompetent. Echoing down the centuries is the perennial problem: how to deal with a ruler who has a rock solid right to rule but is set on wrecking the country he leads.

William Shakespeare's play Richard II was first performed in 1595 by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, the company of actors for whom Shakespeare was the regular writer and who, in the mid 1590s, became the favoured performers at the court of Elizabeth I.
Shaw's performance is beautifully judged: moving from boyish confidence, arrogance and silliness to a true and total appreciation of mortality and pain. It is marked by her signature intelligence and clarity of thought and it works perfectly.
A performance at the Globe on 7 February 1601 was commissioned by supporters of the Earl of Essex's rebellion, which took place the next day, probably aimed at raising support for the revolt against the monarch.
