The chapter begins with a review of three current theories (Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime, Moffitt's dual developmental taxonomy, and Sampson and Laub's general theory of social control) and discuss how each fails to fully develop the explanation of crime in context.
Wiesner et al. detail three processes that are related to persistent patterns of offending: coercive behavior patterns, developmental failures (often due to these behavior patterns), and ongoing exposure to contexts conducive to offending (such as associating with deviant peers or becoming involved with an antisocial partner).
