The Challenge is a 1938 British drama film directed by Milton Rosmer and Luis Trenker and starring Robert Douglas and Luis Trenker. The film is about the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Edward Whymper.

During an early, unsuccessful attempt at climbing the Matterhorn, Edward Whymper finds himself rescued by an italian guide, Jean Antoine Carrel. The two men quickly build a friendship and agree to reach the peak together.
What better way to start this year’s Criterion Challenge than with the aptly named 1938 English exploration film, “The Challenge”. Even though it’s not actually in the collection, it is available on the Criterion Channel.
The Challenge (1938) was not the first film to dramatize the race to the top of this treacherous mountain but this British drama, directed by Milton Rosmer in collaboration with Italian mountaineer turned filmmaker Luis Trenker, is the most famous.
