Biografia. Vita e carriera. Era l'unico figlio maschio di Edward Smith-Stanley, XII conte di Derby, e della sua prima moglie Lady Elizabeth Hamilton. Studiò a Eton College e Trinity College di Cambridge . È stato un deputato per Preston e Lancashire (1796-1832). Nel 1834 succedette al padre come XIII conte di Derby e si ritirò dalla politica.

Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (21 April 1775 – 30 June 1851), KG, of Knowsley Hall in Lancashire (styled Lord Stanley from 1776 to 1832, known as Baron Stanley of Bickerstaffe from 1832-4), was a politician, peer, landowner, builder, farmer, art collector and naturalist.
Even today, he holds the record as the longest serving Leader of the Conservative Party. Derby was Prime Minister three times over the two decades that followed (1852, 1858-59, 1866-68). Each premiership was relatively brief and at no point did he command a majority in the House of Commons.
