  3. After the Nazis came to power in Germany, Joseph Schmidt enjoyed his greatest successes outside that country. In 1937, he toured the United States and performed in Carnegie Hall together with other prominent singers such as Grace Moore .

  4. In October 1942, Schmidt fled a fourth time: to Switzerland, which had officially closed its borders for Jewish refugees from the Third Reich, so he had to enter the country illegally, and was interned in a specific camp for Jewish refugees in Girenbad near Hinwil.
