Samuel Francis Du Pont (September 27, 1803 – June 23, 1865) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy, and a member of the prominent Du Pont family. In the Mexican–American War, Du Pont captured San Diego, and was made commander of the California naval blockade.
He was appointed superintendent of the United States Naval Academy and established new curricula emphasizing mathematics and engineering. In 1855, Du Pont became a part of the Naval Efficiency Board, which resulted in the removal of 201 officers.
Samuel Francis Du Pont, a Union admiral of the Civil War, commanded the Port Royal expedition in 1862, the Union navy’s first major victory over the Confederacy. The following year, his long and distinguished naval career ended with his defeat in Charleston Harbor.
