Sumner High School is a St. Louis public high school that was the first high school for African-American students west of the Mississippi River in the United States. Together with Vashon High School, Sumner was one of only two public high schools in St. Louis City for African-American students and was segregated.

10 mar 2021 · Sumner opened in 1875 as the first high school west of the Mississippi River to give diplomas to Black students and has anchored the Ville for nearly 150 years. But as the former hub of Black culture and population has declined in recent decades, so too has the school’s enrollment.
Sumner was the only Black public high school in St. Louis until 1927. Founded a mere 10 years after the Civil War, Sumner High School was a landmark institution that paved the way for the inclusion of Black teachers in Black schools.
