Záviš z Falkenštejna patřil k rodu jihočeských Vítkovců. V erbu měl zelenou růži ve stříbrném poli pánů z Krumlova, z nichž pocházel jeho otec Budivoj, a na pečeti sokola (der Falken) na památku hradu Falkenštejn, který vlastnili příbuzní jeho matky. Záviš byl pravděpodobně dědicem hradu.
