Willis Franklin Ward (December 28, 1912 – December 30, 1983) was a track and field athlete and American football player who was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1981.
At times Ward was a pioneer, breaking new ground for African Americans. At other times, he was conservative and accommodationist. This exhibit offers some new insights and detail on events surrounding the Georgia Tech game, and explores Ward’s life beyond that notorious incident.

Willis Ward, 1935. Ward opened the 1934 season by sweeping the 60-yard dash, high hurdles, and high jump in five indoor meets. He repeated the feat at the conference championships, solidifying his reputation as a “one-man track team.”
