Since 1904, the world’s top shot putter had been Ralph Rose. He had won the Olympic gold medal in both 1904 and 1908 and had set eight world records between 1904 and 1908. His last, and final world record, was 15.54 (51-0), set at a meeting of the Olympic Club in San Francisco on 21 August 1909.
