Ingegnere, nato a Berlino l'11 dicembre 1838, morto ivi il 20 giugno 1915. Prima d'intraprendere gli studî di ingegneria, lavorò quattro anni alla Wilhelmshütte di Sprottau, fabbrica di macchine, a quei tempi, molto apprezzata. Fu quindi al politecnico di Hannover e a quello di Zurigo.
